Amazingly aromatic, with floral and tart black fruit aromas. Violets, cocoa, blackberries, brambles, pepper, smoke, and minerals all combine on the nose to make a beautifully aromatic wine that is light on its feet and fresh on the palate.

Our first experience with blaufränkisch was this challenging vintage. Lots of sorting (and sacrifice) were made in order to get to what we call the “heart of the vintage”, but it was worth it. 100% stem inclusion, some extended maceration, and 24 months in neutral oak. The moment we tasted this wine after malo, it was obvious it would become something special.

Christopher’s Journal: The winter was gentle and after the fantastic 2012 growing season, this was a heavy crop. The year was somewhat average, with a higher than average rainfall that lead to heavy disease pressure. The harvest thankfully turned warm and dry, but in the case of overcropped vineyards and disease, much of the damage was already done. Lighter more delicate wines were produced, and sorting loss was high, but the wines that were grown and produced with care are fantastic.

Blaufränkisch (Lemberger)

Blaufränkisch (Lemberger) is a grape of Austrian (Hungarian really) origin that later was planted in Germany and from here, the new world under the name Lemberger (from Lemberg). It is starting to catch attention here in the Finger Lakes for its ability to handle our extreme winters, and its relative resistance to disease. It is proving its ability to be relatively flexible in its site adaptability, and we believe we will be seeing more of it in the future.
